Democracy in America

Barack Obama has renewed Americans’, and the world’s, belief in the greatness of the experiment that is our democracy and our society. As Alexis de Tocqueville said in his classic study of American democracy: “In that land the great experiment was to be made… the attempt to construct society upon a new basis; and it was there, for the first time, that theories hitherto unknown, or deemed impracticable, were to exhibit a spectacle for which the world had not been prepared by the history of the past.” This election has prepared new ground, generated new theories and demonstrated that things deemed impracticable are indeed possible. Now we must construct our society upon a new basis once again.  That’s the huge task that faces our President Elect.  But he is a man that is up to that challenge.
